Climbing to the Clouds – Our Stay at Klettar Tower Iceland

When we arrived at Klettar Guesthouse in Þórshöfn, we didn’t realize we’d be spending the night in the clouds. Yep, someone took an old cement tube , built rooms inside it, added a dramatic spiral staircase on the outside—and voilà! Instant Icelandic adventure.

Our room was on the fourth floor, which meant hauling ourselves (and our bags) up an outdoor staircase that clung to the curved metal wall like a ladder to Valhalla. For someone with a healthy respect for heights (okay, full-blown fear), this was no small feat. I’m pretty sure I didn’t breathe between floors two and four.

Inside, though? Cozy, quiet, and surprisingly modern. And the view across the windswept fields made the climb totally worth it.

Above us loomed the fifth-floor glass dome—a lookout platform built specifically for spotting the Northern Lights. We climbed up there (yes, again!) after dark, sipping some champagne and hope. But the auroras ghosted us that night. Just clouds, wind, and the distant bleating of a judgmental horse.

Still, staying at Klettar was unforgettable: part spaceship, part norrsken-hunting tower. If you’re into unique stays and can handle a little altitude, this place is a gem.

Just bring a headlamp. And nerves of steel.
