We left Vik at stupid o’clock in the morning, chasing that perfect golden hour glow. The roads were empty, the air was crisp, and we had that smug feeling of being the only ones crazy enough to be out exploring this early but we have a time to catch later this afternoon.
Kvernufoss isn’t the headline act like Skógafoss, but trust us—it’s got serious main character energy. After a short walk along a quiet path, we were feeling pretty pleased with ourselves for “discovering” this hidden gem. Then… plot twist.
Out of nowhere, three Icelandic horses appeared on the trail. No saddle, no humans, just vibing. They looked at us like we were the unexpected guests. We stood there frozen (part awe, part cold), while they casually trotted past like this was their waterfall. Fair enough.
When we finally reached Kvernufoss, we had it all to ourselves. It’s tucked into a mossy canyon, and yes—you can walk behind it. (Spoiler: it’s wet. Really wet.)
Early mornings, wild horses, and secret waterfalls. Iceland, you weird and wonderful show-off. Don’t miss this. This is high up on our list in Iceland.
