Between Two Continents – A Dive into Silfra

One of the most surreal experiences during our Iceland journey was snorkeling in Silfra, the world-famous fissure located in Þingvellir National Park. Here, you actually swim between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates – how cool is that?

The crystal-clear water was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Visibility stretches up to 100 meters, making it feel like you’re flying, not floating. It’s cold – about 2–4°C year-round – but the dry suit kept us warm enough to enjoy every moment.

Henrik, however, wasn’t entirely sold. After our dip, he chuckled and said, “It was just rocks, really”. Not wrong – but those rocks have a pretty wild backstory!

Fun facts:

Silfra is the only place on Earth where you can snorkel or dive directly between tectonic plates. The fissure widens approximately 2.5 centimeters every year due to tectonic movement. The water comes from the nearby Langjökull glacier and is filtered for decades through underground lava – that’s what makes it so clear (and drinkable!).

While Henrik may have seen just rocks, I saw a portal between worlds – raw, powerful nature in its most elegant form.

Here’s the picture of us looking like whales. Wonder if we can see our relatives then on the whale watching on Saturday. 😂
