Visiting the Katla Ice Cave was like stepping into another world – a shimmering, frozen wonderland hidden beneath one of Iceland’s most powerful volcanoes. Located near the town of Vík on Iceland’s south coast, this natural ice cave is formed by the mighty Katla volcano, resting under the Mýrdalsjökull glacier.
We were picked up in a sturdy super jeep built for Iceland’s wild terrain, and the drive itself quickly turned into an adventure. Our guide expertly navigated glacial rivers, black sand plains, and rocky paths. Before reaching the cave, we made a stop at a breathtaking viewpoint where scenes from the Netflix series Katla were filmed. Standing there, with endless volcanic landscapes stretching in every direction, we truly felt like we had stepped into a sci-fi movie.
Getting into the cave, though, wasn’t exactly a walk in the park – at least not for me. I tend to be a bit clumsy, and combining narrow, icy walkways, crampons on my boots, and just a rope to hold onto? Let’s just say it was a risky business! But that only made the experience more memorable (and honestly, a bit hilarious in hindsight).
Once inside, all nerves melted away. We were surrounded by ancient ice layered with ash from past eruptions, creating mesmerizing patterns of white, blue, and black. The cave is constantly changing, shaped by the weather and volcanic activity, so no two visits are ever the same. It felt like walking through time, with every crack and color telling its own story.
What made this experience truly special was the silence and stillness inside the cave – a rare moment of calm in an otherwise wild and unpredictable environment. It was both humbling and awe-inspiring.
If you’re planning a trip to Iceland, Katla Ice Cave is a must-see. It’s one of the few accessible all year round, and it offers a unique glimpse into the heart of Iceland’s geological power and natural beauty.
