Reykjavík – A City of Contrasts and Creativity

Our time in Reykjavík was short, but packed with character, charm, and unexpected moments. Iceland’s quirky capital is a perfect blend of contrasts — where towering landmarks meet tiny houses, and ancient volcanic energy pulses beneath a vibrant, modern city.

We spent one evening and the following morning simply wandering the streets, letting the city guide us. From small, colorful homes and strange, almost whimsical buildings to Hallgrímskirkja, the iconic concrete church that towers over the city — Reykjavík is full of visual surprises.

Right in front of Hallgrímskirkja stands a striking statue of Leif Eriksson, the Norse explorer who is believed to have discovered Vinland (now part of North America) around the year 1000 — long before Columbus set sail. It really makes you wonder: Who actually discovered America?

Every corner of the city held something new — street art and bold murals, cozy little pubs tucked between buildings, and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

On Saturday evening, we caught a showing of The Lava Show, where real molten lava is poured out in front of your eyes. It was not only super cool to watch, but also gave us a deeper appreciation for the volcanic forces that have shaped (and continue to shape) Iceland.

Before leaving the city, we visited FlyOver Iceland — a virtual flight experience that takes you soaring across the island’s dramatic landscapes. It might sound touristy, but it was genuinely breathtaking and emotional. A perfect ending to our Reykjavík stay.

Reykjavík may be small, but it’s bursting with personality, creativity, and unforgettable experiences.
